Tuesday 10th August
37 Miles
This speck on the horizon is where we were headed |
Susie:
Hills and wind and 37 miles and burning sun, but deceptive because of the wind. Set off at 11.30, getting choc bread and apple flaps in the village. The cyclists camped next to us gave us 3 eggs so I had one for breakfast. We decided to go to Laon as it sounds nice.
| never ending hills |
Headed east away from the river mostly over rolling hills of cut wheat, very uninhabited.
Many fields of a black bean crop that looks dead- we never
figured out if it was a bad year, or supposed to look like that. |
| The approach to Laon |
The wind got stronger and stronger, but the time we got to Laon we were exhausted.
| Camping in the woods |
James:
37 miles up and down many hills with the wind getting stronger as the day went on. Campsite is cool, like being in a forest, makes a nice change to the fields and open grass spaces.
| The best time of the day is the cup of tea after the tent is pitched |
Found a very nice campsite on a wooded hillside and headed into Laon to eat. Laon is lovely. It is very old, and ontop of a huge rock with a 12th century cathedral. Ate a very nice and expensive meal opposite the cathedral, then got soaked in a huge rainstorm.
| Up to the medieval city of Laon |
| Looking back to the route we travelled |
Notre Damme Laon, looks like the
one in Paris but this one came first |
| expensive food |
Went up to the top of Laon to see the cathedral and have dinner in front of it, only for the rain to start which meant a cold, wet and dark bike ride down the very big hill to the campsite. Dinner was yum so was worth it.

| Waiting for the rain to stop |
