Day 23. Thunder and the Beast

Sunday 22th August
37 Miles

Cooling off in an agricultural irrigation system

Susie
Woken in the middle of the night by a massive thunderstorm with scary lightening. We considered running to the toilet block for safety, but then thought we would be more likely to be struck if we were standing up, so we cowered in the middle of the tent and wondered if having tent poles would make us more of less safe. The people in the caravan next door later said they considered inviting us in for shelter. But they didn't. Not the best nights sleep.

By morning the rain had stopped. Packed and said goodbye to our new friends, then headed west as planned.

James
Survived a big storm last night, lots of lightning and some very close to the tent!! Today was hot and sunny once clouds cleared.

lots of vineyards

As the day went on it got hotter and hotter, and tonight it is too hot to sleep. More thunder rumbling in the distance. The day took us back to the Loire then through Tours- nice town, big open streets. We got burgers there for dinner. Ate lunch in a park by the Loire- Serrano ham and tomato baguettes, very nice.

Cycled through Tours to a little campsite just a bit further on. Hamburgers tonight Yum!

We don't mention it in the diary, but this was the first night 'The Beast' appeared.
It was grunting and snuffling around our tent in the middle of the night. James
bravely sprinted with our rubbish to the bin in the dark and after that it left us
alone for the night, but this was only the first of the beast encounters........

Tomorrow to Samur or beyond. Hopefully not in the rain.

704 miles so far
