Day 24. Troglodytes

Monday 23rd August
48 Miles!

Weather and the Loire

Susie
Chantepie, St Hilaire, St Florent. Near Saumur.
A day of wind. Again. And showers. And flies. And mostly flat but with huge hills at the end.

James
48 Miles today, another windy day and some showers too! Mostly flat and off road so the wind and rain were manageable. In tent now with it pouring with rain, it stared 1 min after the tent was up.

Boats on the Loire

Cycling heaven

48 miles from Tours to Saumur, mostly through pretty wild, jungly scenery. Towns are hidden by trees so it looks like an empty landscape. Saw the castle that inspired Sleeping Beauty (not sure why)

Le Chateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant

Saw a castle (Sleeping Beauty's Castle) and also went up an 18% hill which led to crazy troglodyte cave houses which were great to see. Worth pushing bikes up the hill for!

James challenged me to a star jump at the top of the 18% hill

and then the cycle route took us up an 18% hill to rolling vineyards, then down to an underground village. Very cool- the cycle track goes right through the caves.

The Loire Valley cycle path led us down here...

Tourist Information about
how the caves were built

By 7pm still no supermarket- finally found an enormous one outside Saumur, then we had another 3 miles up hills to the campsite.

Campsite is just outside of Saumur, it's a 4★ but doubt it will mean much to us as only here for the night and off again in the sun tomorrow.

Got tent up just in time as started pouring with rain as the last bits were put in tent. Ate chicken and rice in dark tent with little dangling bike lights to see what were were doing.

Got the tent up just in time before torrential rain. Spit roast chicken for dinner.
Roast chicken for dinner Yum!
